Frequently Asked Questions
Here you can find answers to the most frequently asked questions.
What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?
Mental Health First Aid is training that supports people to recognise early signs of mental health difficulties, listen appropriately, and signpost to further help. It focuses on early support, not treatment.
Who holds responsibility once someone discloses a concern?
Responsibility remains with the organisation and its leadership. MHFA provides support for early conversations but does not transfer duty of care away from management or employer systems.
Does MHFA reduce organisational risk on its own?
No. Training alone does not manage workplace stress or mental health risk. MHFA is most effective when it sits alongside clear processes, leadership accountability, and health and safety measures.
How does MHFA align with HSE guidance on stress at work?
The HSE recognises stress as a health and safety issue requiring risk management, not solely training interventions. MHFA can complement this approach but cannot replace it.
What support should MHFAiders have in place?
MHFAiders should have clear role boundaries, escalation routes, access to support or supervision, and time and recognition for the role. Without this, MHFA roles can become unsustainable.
Is MHFA suitable for all workplaces?
MHFA can be helpful across many settings, but it requires careful implementation. High-pressure or emotionally demanding environments need particularly clear boundaries and organisational support.
How many MHFAiders does an organisation need?
There is no universal number. This depends on workforce size, risk profile, organisational structure, and available support systems.
What should organisations consider before introducing MHFA?
Clarity on purpose, boundaries, escalation, support structures, and leadership responsibility. These factors matter more than the training itself.
